On August 23, 2023, India achieved a historic milestone as the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft successfully touched down near the lunar south pole. This triumph serves as a powerful contrast to the programme's humble beginnings six decades ago at Thumba, near Thiruvananthapuram, where the nation was first experimenting with basic sounding rockets.
The Foundations of Ambition
The journey began in 1962 with the establishment of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (Incospar). The first sounding rocket took flight on November 21, 1963, leading to the official formation of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on August 15, 1969. By 1972, the Department of Space and the Space Commission were created to provide a formal structure for these aspirations.
Unlike the geopolitical space races of the era, Vikram Sarabhai envisioned space technology as a tool for national development. This philosophy led to the launch of Aryabhata in 1975 and the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE), which brought education and information to remote rural communities.
Mastering Indigenous Launch Capabilities
The 1980s marked a shift toward self-reliance. After an initial failure in 1979, the SLV-3 successfully placed the Rohini satellite into orbit on July 18, 1980, placing India among a select few nations with indigenous launch capabilities. This era also saw the birth of the INSAT system for telecommunications and the APPLE satellite.
ISRO's growth was characterized by a resilient cycle of building, failing, diagnosing, and redesigning. This perseverance paid off with the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which became the reliable workhorse for both domestic and international missions.
Scaling New Heights
India eventually transitioned from earth-observation tools to deep-space exploration:
- Chandrayaan-1 (2008): Confirmed the presence of water molecules on the Moon.
- Mars Orbiter Mission (2013): Made India the first nation to reach Martian orbit on its very first attempt.
Today, the infrastructure is vast. The UR Rao Satellite Centre has developed over 130 satellites, and the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota manages cutting-edge launch operations. India has evolved from using space to observe Earth to exploring the farthest reaches of the solar system.
