A New Era for Freight Logistics
In a landmark achievement for the nation's infrastructure, the Indian Railways has successfully deployed its first-ever double-stack long-haul container train. This pioneering journey began at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai, delivering a massive load of 360 TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) to the CONCOR Goods Cargo Terminal (GCT) located at Varnama within the Vadodara Division.
Technical Breakdown of the Pilot Run
The operation commenced on August 21 at 7 pm, traversing a total distance of roughly 422 km. The train's configuration featured two distinct double-stack rakes. The lead rake, powered by locomotive 60311, managed a tonnage of 1,817 tonnes with 45 1 loads. Following closely was the trailing rake, hauled by locomotive 24690, which carried another 45 1 loads with a total tonnage of 2,105 tonnes.
Strategic and Economic Impact
This advancement is set to redefine India's economic landscape by enhancing the scale and speed of freight movement. By transporting more containers in a single trip, the railways can significantly lower transportation costs and alleviate the pressure on overcrowded ports and terminals. Furthermore, the move is expected to shorten product delivery times by maximizing the volume of goods per journey.
