Your sugar just got pricier. Your fuel bill feels weirdly unchanged. And your mechanic just found gunk where it shouldn't be. Coincidence? No — same policy.
India's E20 programme, which blends 20% ethanol into petrol, was pitched as a clean win: cut the oil import bill, help sugarcane farmers, go green. Two years in, it's turned into a three-front consumer complaint — hitting the kitchen, the pump, and the garage all at once.
1. The Kitchen: Why Is Sugar Suddenly Expensive?
Sugar-linked stocks hit 52-week highs this week, even as households feel the pinch at the store. The Opposition — Congress and AAP — has pointed straight at ethanol, arguing that sugarcane being diverted to fuel production is squeezing supply.
The government pushes back hard: it says the share of sugar diverted for ethanol actually fell from 12% in 2022-23 to 9% in 2025-26, and blames the price rise on festive demand, weaker sugarcane yields, and a 16%+ jump in global sugar prices instead.
Bottom line: Both sides have numbers. Neither side has fully convinced the other.
2. The Pump: Where Did the "Savings" Go?
Ethanol blending was supposed to shrink India's crude import bill — and on paper, it has, reportedly saving over ₹1 lakh crore in forex and cutting emissions along the way. But the government also periodically hikes the price it pays mills for ethanol, to keep supply flowing. That cost doesn't just vanish — it moves through the system.
So while the country imports less crude, drivers aren't exactly seeing the windfall at the pump they were promised. The savings are real, but they're macro — not something you feel while filling your tank.
3. The Garage: "My Bike Never Did This Before"
This is the part actually going viral. Since the shift from E10 to E20, drivers have reported a real drop in mileage — ethanol simply carries less energy per litre than pure petrol. Worse, ethanol is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air, which over time can corrode fuel lines, rubber seals, and metal engine parts never designed for higher ethanol content.
Older vehicles are bearing the brunt. For cars and bikes built before the E20 rollout, this isn't a theoretical risk — it's showing up in repair bills.
So Who's Paying for India's Energy Independence?
Cheaper sugar. Cheaper fuel. Cleaner engines. E20 promised all three would stay untouched. Right now, ordinary consumers are absorbing the cost on all three fronts — while the government's answer to each complaint sounds remarkably similar: "not linked," "planned rollout," "isolated cases."
