Petrol prices differ across Indian states mainly due to variations in state VAT, local cess, and dealer commissions charged on top of the base fuel price set by oil marketing companies. Since VAT is calculated as a percentage of the base price plus excise duty, states with higher tax rates end up with noticeably costlier petrol even when the underlying cost from refineries is the same nationwide.
Even cities within the same state can see different rates depending on transportation and freight costs from the nearest refinery or depot, along with local dealer margins that oil companies allow to vary slightly by region. This is why two cities just a few hundred kilometres apart may still show a small difference in petrol prices.
All values shown here are collected directly from primary oil marketing companies and updated daily to ensure accuracy, so you always have a dependable reference point when comparing petrol rates across different parts of the country.
State VAT is the biggest driver, followed by local dealer commission and the freight cost of moving fuel from the nearest depot. Two cities can differ by ₹10–20 per litre purely on state taxes.
