Car & Bike Mileage Checker (km/L)

Calculate your car or bike's real mileage in km per litre and cost per km using odometer readings.

Determining your car or motorcycle's true real-world fuel mileage (km/L) is vital for monitoring engine health and detecting underlying mechanical issues. Factory-claimed ARAI mileage figures are measured in controlled lab environments and often differ from actual road conditions.

Use our Car & Bike Mileage Checker to calculate exact km per litre and cost per km using the precise full-tank-to-full-tank method.

Guide & Complete Information — Car & Bike Mileage Checker (km/L)

How to Calculate Fuel Mileage Using Tank-to-Tank Method

The tank-to-tank method is the gold standard for measuring accurate vehicle fuel efficiency:

  1. Step 1: Fill Up the Tank: Fill your vehicle's fuel tank to auto-cut off and record the odometer reading (e.g., 12,000 km).
  2. Step 2: Drive Normally: Drive your vehicle normally until the fuel tank level drops to near reserve or half tank (e.g., 400 km driven).
  3. Step 3: Refill to Auto-Cut Off: Refill the tank to auto-cut off at the same fuel station pump and note the exact litres filled (e.g., 25 Litres) and new odometer reading (12,400 km).
  4. Step 4: Apply Formula: Calculate distance covered (12,400 - 12,000 = 400 km) and divide by litres (400 ÷ 25 = 16 km/L).

Mileage Formula

Real-World Mileage (km/L) = (Current Odometer Reading - Initial Odometer Reading) ÷ Fuel Litres Filled

Why Does Instrument Cluster Mileage Differ from Actual Mileage?

Multi-Information Display (MID) gauges estimate fuel consumption based on fuel injector pulse widths rather than measured flow. Discrepancies of 5% to 10% between MID readouts and real-world tank-to-tank calculations are common.

Key Factors That Cause Sudden Mileage Drop

  • Under-inflated tyres or misaligned wheels
  • Dirty engine air filter or carbon-clogged fuel injectors
  • Dragging brake calipers or worn spark plugs
  • Using incorrect viscosity engine oil during service

Frequently Asked Questions2 Questions

QWhat is the most accurate method to calculate mileage?

The full-tank to full-tank auto-cut off method is the most reliable way to calculate exact km/L, avoiding manual estimation errors.

QHow does AC usage affect fuel mileage?

Operating air conditioning places extra load on the engine compressor, reducing fuel efficiency by 10-15% in bumper-to-bumper city traffic.
